California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls
Emily Sunahara (formerly Van Atta) is the Fiscal and Operations Director of the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls and has worked in state government her entire career. She was hired with the Commission during a time of rebuilding and over the last three years, as part of the Executive team, has successfully achieved a 52% increase in the California Commission’s budget, participated in design and implementation of a key program aimed to break down the barriers to gender pay equity in California titled #EqualPayCA, and re-established the complete spectrum of operations and administrative processes for an agency that had been previously cut from the Governor’s budget. She believes that when we lift each other up the whole ship rises and therefore she is a proponent of data transparency and information sharing, values she will bring to the NACW board. Emily has a bachelor’s degree in Economics and was recently accepted to the University of Southern California Master of Public Administration program for Fall 2020. She is married with two young daughters whom she credits as her motivation in working towards gender and racial equity.
