Voices of Women in America

The Voices of Women in America (VoWA) Initiative

The goal of the Voices of Women in America project is to provide a venue for women’s voices, across the nation.

Each Commission that participates can also develop its own report to its own appointing authorities outlining what the women of that community have said. We will provide you access to the data from questionnaires submitted by women of your jurisdictions.  A secondary outcome of the project can be a guiding agenda for your own Commission – with documentation that this is what the women of your community say they want and need.

About the Project

The National Association of Commissions for Women (NACW) has launched a listening project across the United States! We are asking all Commissions for Women (CFW) and Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) to help us ensure that the voices of women in your community are heard and are included in the Voices of Women in America report.  Join us!

  • Judith Vaughan-Prather, Executive Director, Maryland Commission for Women, [email protected]

National Survey - August 2019 - February 1, 2020

Every CFW and CSW across the nation is asked to encourage the women in its state, county or city to participate in the Voices of Women in America survey.  Share the link to the survey with your distribution lists and ask your commissioners to complete the survey and to share it with their networks as well.  Post the link on your website and social media pages.  Send repeated announcements (we can provide the content) to all your contacts.  Ensure that the women you serve have their voices heard!  The data we collect and analyze will be incorporated into our national report with a target release date of July 2020. Information will be shared with all participating women's commissions to help them provide more comprehensive advocacy, programs and services.  Click here to access the survey.

Listening Tours

Commissions for Women/Commissions on the Status of Women are also encouraged to expand the scope of the project by conducting Listening Tours in your own jurisdictions.  Listening Tours typically consist of public forums conducted around your state, county or city.  The women of each region are invited to “talk to us” about their needs and concerns as women.  You can choose to hold one forum or a series of forums around your state, county or city.  The NACW will provide you the tools needed to conduct the forum and solicit the participants’ input, including the agenda for a 2-hour open forum with time for “testimony,” prioritizing the issues presented, identifying the “top five” concerns, and briefly discussing possible remedies.  We have posted, a script with coordinating power point to use during the forum, examples for reports of the forums and a template for combining the information from multiple forums if more than one is conducted.

Final Product

The outcome will be a report delivered to the President, Congress and the nation outlining what the women of our country have told us are their concerns as women. NACW will collect all data from the national survey and the listening tours submitted by December 31, 2019. Then, NACW will collate all reports and data into a national report and publish it in July 2020 in time for the 100th Anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment. In addition, each participating Commission will be provided the survey data for its area to develop its own report.
